Let There Be Whales!

Whales in Dabob Bay — photo by Connie Gallant

During a water monitoring expedition on Dabob Bay on Friday, January 27th, JD spotted a whale by the north estuary section near Broadspit, close to Taylor Shellfish Labs. At the same time he spotted it, he stopped the boat, pulled up the monitoring meter, and yelled, "Whales off the port bow!" I was below inputting data and ran to the cockpit, grabbed my ever-ready camera, and started rapid-firing. JD believes he saw 2 whales, but I photographed only one.

JD is one lucky guy - several years ago while sailing on Quilcene Bay with the Little Turtle, he had an Orca pod surface around the boat while chasing seals. It was a hair-raising moment as he hoped the whales would not mistake Little Turtle for a sea lion.

The whales frolicked around for a while, then disappeared to not be seen again by us. We hope they find their way back to open waters.
